Item 39, The One That Will Work

item39-logoI have read a lot of books and ebooks over the last year dealing with making cash on the internet. This is something I have a great interest in. I make a pretty good living but I do it working for someone else. I have always felt like I was underachieving in a big way. I am a smart guy. I ought to be able to figure this out! So that is what this is. A chronicle of trying to figure this out.

Every great endeavor has to start with a goal. Being that this is an attempt to make some money via the internet I think that the appropriate goals would be a monetary in nature. I am not interested in making money quickly. If this takes me a year, so be it. I think that my primary goal will be a specific dollar amount with a secondary goal of a residual income.

Goal Number 1: $100

I have been using Google Adsense for a while at work and for a couple of personal project blogs and experiments. The minimum amount Google will write a check for is $100. That seems like a good place to start.

Goal Number 2: $100 per month

Again, the minimum amount that Google will write a check for is $100. I would like them to write me a check every month for $100.

If I can accomplish those two goals I will be further along than my unfocused attempts have brought me in the last two years. In the two years since I started messing around with this idea I have made $43. While it has not been a whole hearted attempt it has been educational.

The latest site I have started is called Vehicular.us and it is a blog dealing with automotive issues. It is an experiment that stemmed from getting 3,000 articles on the subject through a transaction on fiverr.com. Along with the $3.99 domain name, I have invested only $8.99. The interesting thing is that although it is a new site it has made a few bucks.

I have thought that I would consider the experiment a success if I could pocket $9.00. The articles tat I bought were high quantity but low quality.

I randomly chose one of the articles and pasted the first sentence into Google. The sentence was:

Maintaining or restoring the “looks-like-new” condition of their automobiles is a consuming interest for most car owners.

Google returned 4,820 results. These article have been around the block a few thousand times. But still, I thought I would try. It has surprised me. It was started on Tuesday, November 27th and so far it has actually made a little money.

 November 27th - $1.08
 November 30th - $2.34
 December 2nd - $0.42
 December 3rd - $2.71

That is a grand total of $6.55 or an average of $0.94 per day. At that rate I should make $28.20 for 30 days. It is not a fortune but it is something and it is 72.78% of my $9.00 goal.

This site itself is an experiment. Item 39 is a name I have had in the back of my mind for years. It has been in there so long I can not remember how it got there. I know that it is represents not giving up. Like the old Ed Wood movie, “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” There was a Seinfeld episode where Jerry was trying to get his frikends to go see that movie with him.

“‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’, one night only, the big screen. …. This isn‘t ‘Plans 1 through 8 from Outer Space’, this is ‘Plan 9‘, this is the one that worked.”

This is the one that will work.
