  • Vehicular.us Update

    Vehicular.us Update

VEHICULAR-LOGO-V2After a little more than 6 months the Vehicular Experiment has yielded some very interesting lessons. Before I get into lessons learned I want to reiterate the experiment , the goals for the site, the analytics and revenue.

I had a collection of low quality articles. They revolved around things automotive and also  include RV, motorcycles and watercraft. I paid $5.00 for these articles on Fiverr.com. I also paid $3.99 for a .us domain from GoDaddy.

The experiment was whether those low quality articles could garner enough traffic to fuel a few Google AdSense ads to make back the $8.99 outlay of cash. I built the site ( Vehicular.us ) in WordPress and started putting up a few articles. I used the Yoast SEO plugin to help keep an eye on keywords and the little things that help in SEO. All in all, minimal effort.

    The Analytics

So, 7 months later, what happened? Here are some of the analytics:

    • Pageviews: 8,307
    • Visits: 3,575
    • Unique Visitors: 3,080
    • Pages/Visit: 2.32
    • Bounce Rate: 33.06%

Not horrible. I’m not quitting my day job anytime soon, but for not doing any back linking at all, and not posting anything new on the site for months, not bad.

    Google AdSense

As of today, Vehicular.us has made exactly $30.37 which is $21.38 over my goal of $8.99!

While this is all great and successful, it was really the answers to some of my questions that I was really after.

    Lessons Learned

Of the lessons I learned, on of the biggest was that half of the revenue was produced in the first 40 days. Those were the days when I was posting articles on a daily basis. The second half of the revenue trickled in over the next 6 months.

Another lesson, is that you can buy traffic but it does very little to your overall success. The traffic you seek has to have a a good reason to come to your site. Meaning, good content. SEO can help a little with bad content, but not enough to matter. The Pages/Visit stat of 2.32 will attest that most people do not stick around.

I think that the domain name is a poor one. I wonder if people have a hard time with the spelling and the .us TLD is not conducive to gaining traction.

    What’s Next?

I think the next step is to seek out or to create some better content. Maybe spruce up the place a bit. When I created the site I did it quickly with no real design.

I think that I will use more of the low quality content but I will change the content to try to make it more unique. Just a little side experiment.

  • Item 39, The One That Will Work

Item 39, The One That Will Work

item39-logoI have read a lot of books and ebooks over the last year dealing with making cash on the internet. This is something I have a great interest in. I make a pretty good living but I do it working for someone else. I have always felt like I was underachieving in a big way. I am a smart guy. I ought to be able to figure this out! So that is what this is. A chronicle of trying to figure this out.

Every great endeavor has to start with a goal. Being that this is an attempt to make some money via the internet I think that the appropriate goals would be a monetary in nature. I am not interested in making money quickly. If this takes me a year, so be it. I think that my primary goal will be a specific dollar amount with a secondary goal of a residual income.

    Goal Number 1: $100

I have been using Google Adsense for a while at work and for a couple of personal project blogs and experiments. The minimum amount Google will write a check for is $100. That seems like a good place to start.

Goal Number 2: $100 per month

Again, the minimum amount that Google will write a check for is $100. I would like them to write me a check every month for $100.

If I can accomplish those two goals I will be further along than my unfocused attempts have brought me in the last two years. In the two years since I started messing around with this idea I have made $43. While it has not been a whole hearted attempt it has been educational.

The latest site I have started is called Vehicular.us and it is a blog dealing with automotive issues. It is an experiment that stemmed from getting 3,000 articles on the subject through a transaction on fiverr.com. Along with the $3.99 domain name, I have invested only $8.99. The interesting thing is that although it is a new site it has made a few bucks.

I have thought that I would consider the experiment a success if I could pocket $9.00. The articles tat I bought were high quantity but low quality.

I randomly chose one of the articles and pasted the first sentence into Google. The sentence was:

Maintaining or restoring the “looks-like-new” condition of their automobiles is a consuming interest for most car owners.

Google returned 4,820 results. These article have been around the block a few thousand times. But still, I thought I would try. It has surprised me. It was started on Tuesday, November 27th and so far it has actually made a little money.

     November 27th - $1.08
     November 30th - $2.34
     December 2nd - $0.42
     December 3rd - $2.71

That is a grand total of $6.55 or an average of $0.94 per day. At that rate I should make $28.20 for 30 days. It is not a fortune but it is something and it is 72.78% of my $9.00 goal.

This site itself is an experiment. Item 39 is a name I have had in the back of my mind for years. It has been in there so long I can not remember how it got there. I know that it is represents not giving up. Like the old Ed Wood movie, “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” There was a Seinfeld episode where Jerry was trying to get his frikends to go see that movie with him.

“‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’, one night only, the big screen. …. This isn‘t ‘Plans 1 through 8 from Outer Space’, this is ‘Plan 9‘, this is the one that worked.”

This is the one that will work.
